JND
JND www.myspace.com/jas0njnd, co-founder of Freyed Knot is one of the finest lyricists and beat producers in the UK hip-hop scene. Hailing from Bradford, his lyric writing and production have been featured on both Freyed Knot albums, along with numerous other releases from artists such as Pedigree Chumps, Beit Nun and Kosyne to name but a few.
The Band
Jay5ive----DRUMS
Jonny Jay5ive – Jay5ive didn’t start playing drums until two months into his music GCSE course which he was forced to do as the Art course was full! Having never played an instrument in his life, his teacher asked what he would like to learn…Half a decade later and Jonathan “Jay5ive” Newell is arguably one of the most accomplished and talented hip-hop drummers in the UK. Jay5ive has been in numerous bands (including firmly established Yorkshire band, Willful Missing), mainly playing rock as it was the only genre he’d really been exposed to originally. However, one of his main influences through the years was ?uestlove of The Roots, which gave him a taste for the hip-hop groove. Enrolling at Bradford College’s Music BTEC course along with NTR and previous guitarist Egon, Jay5ive was brought to the attention of ExP & JND by a mutual friend and has remained Freyed Knot’s only drummer through over 2 years of a constantly changing lineup.
Nick the Racist----BASS
NTR, formerly "Nick the Racist" for ironic reasons and now officially and more politically correct running with “Nick the Rainbow”, is one of only 4 surviving members of the Freyed Knot crew that started in Feb 07. Nick has since seen the coming and going of 2 guitarists, 2 female vocalists, 2 DJs and a percussionist, and has remained one of the most crucial members of the group. Introduced to ExP & JND by a mutual friend on the same BTEC music technology course in 07, Nick was locally famed for his work as a bassist with numerous live bands and has stood in for such acts as Accept Decline with minimal notice and played to a higher standard than their actual bassist. A lover of hip-hop and long time ambassador of marijuana, NTR’s laid back style and comfort behind a bass has been one of Freyed Knot’s driving forces since the beginning and will be with them through to the end!
Ben the 2nd----GUITAR (& Bass & Drums)
Ben Wilson is one of the most talented and hard-working musicians in the UK at the moment. Along with his guitar playing and song writing for Freyed Knot, he is also a producer and DJ with released original and remix material, under various guises, most notably 'Bonn Lewis' (www.myspace.com/bonnlewis). He was the mastering and mixing genius behind the entire MoreFire album and has since been taken on by Sinoptic Music Records as their full time mastering engineer. Having been involved in the UK music scene since he was 13, Ben Wilson has played in many bands and been involved with countless projects, most notably his drumming in electro-folk supergroup Black Diamond Bay. He is also a renowned music teacher, specialising in drum, bass and guitar teaching amongst other crafts he has mastered.
Tom----Alto Sax
Tom – Tom Regan, the youngest member of the group (he’ll be 21 in May 2010) hails from Lancaster and has had a valid driving license since December 2006. These accomplishments aside, Tom has developed a musical ability beyond most of the saxophonists in his age range in the UK right now, having mastered numerous styles from his Trinity Guildhall Jazz Saxophone Grade 8 days, to his work with 11 piece funk/soul outfit “Groove-a-licious”. While completing his A levels, Tom was signed to a professional gigging contract with a function band, and he has played many prestigious venues including Glastonbury. Tom came to the attention of ExP through Gumtree of all places, while he was studying his Jazz Degree at Leeds College of Music, and was also responsible for recruiting Rach Millar into Freyed Knot as well. The addition of this horn section headed up by Tom and Rach has pushed Freyed Knot’s live performance and music in general into a whole new gear.
Rach----Baritone Sax
Rach Millar; straight outta Aberdeenshire in the ghetto Highlands of Scotland. Rach has been playing sax since 12 and accomplished a great deal since then. She has been responsible for booking, promoting and organising gigs for Mercury Prize Nominees, Polar Bear, as well as playing alongside them, and was appointed as a vital booking agent for JazzAberdeen. Currently studying her bachelor degree in Jazz Studies at Leeds College of Music, Rach was brought into Freyed Knot along with Tom Regan to provide a much-needed horn section which has opened up the possibilities of the band to a whole different level. Now writing all-new material featuring the saxes, Rach’s astonishing musical ability has pushed the boundaries of Freyed Knot’s genre and even created a much louder buzz at live gigs due to the individuality and originality of the music she has helped create.
